Who Can Apply for a UK Student Visa?

You can apply for a UK Student visa if you:

  • Are aged 16 or over
  • Have received an offer from a licensed UK student sponsor
  • Can demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses
  • Have strong English language skills (speak, read, write, and understand)
  • Have parental consent if under 18

Note: Students aged 16-17 who wish to study at an independent school may qualify for a Child Student Visa.

When to Apply UK Student Visa?

  • Outside the UK: Apply up to 6 months before your course starts. Typical decision time: 3 weeks
  • Inside the UK: Apply up to 3 months before your course starts, and before your current visa expires. Decision time: Up to 8 weeks

Visa Duration:

  • Courses at degree level or above: Stay up to 5 years
  • Courses below degree level: Stay up to 2 years

Extend or Switch Visas:

You may be eligible to:

  • Extend your student visa to continue your education
  • Switch to a Student or Graduate Visa if already in the UK

Visa Fees & Healthcare

  • Visa Fee: £524 (from inside or outside the UK)
  • Healthcare Surcharge: Based on visa length

Each dependent must pay the visa fee and surcharge individually.

Arriving in the UK:

  • If your course is < 6 months: Arrive up to 1 week before the start date
  • If your course is > 6 months: Arrive up to 1 month before
  • Do not travel before the visa start date

Eligible Courses:

You can study:

  • Full-time courses at RQF level 3–8
  • Part-time postgraduate courses (RQF 7+)
  • English language courses (CEFR level B2+)
  • Research-based higher degrees (may require ATAS certificate)

Financial Requirements:

You must show financial capacity to support your stay unless you’ve lived in the UK with a valid visa for the past 12 months.

  • Courses in London: £1,334/month (up to 9 months)
  • Courses outside London: £1,023/month (up to 9 months)

Funds must be held for 28 consecutive days and dated within 31 days of visa application.

Bringing Dependents:

You can bring your spouse/partner and children if you are:

  • A government-sponsored student studying a course over 6 months
  • Enrolled in a postgraduate course (RQF 7 or above) lasting 9+ months
    (From Jan 2024, only PhDs or research-based programs are eligible)

Dependent Financial Requirement:

  • In London: £845/month per dependent
  • Outside London: £680/month per dependent
